lunch

In Oxford City Centre, Pierre Victoire has long been the city’s best-loved independent restaurant, a family-owned fixture where seasons shape the plate and regulars shape the conversation. Recognition with an AA Rosette and mention in Harden's sit alongside a faithful chorus of online praise, but it is the daily verdict of diners that matters most. A tight-knit team, many long-serving, lends the place a reassuring rhythm from the pass to the dining room.

The cooking leans classic French with a playful Oxford wink: think chicken liver pâté and crowd favourites such as moules marinières, oysters, escargot and Fondue Savoyarde, or a deeply savoury Onglet Steak-Frites and Entrecôte with sauce poivrée. Desserts keep nostalgia alive, from a glossy Fig Tarte Tatin with crème fraîche to a sumptuous gooseberry dessert, or why not try the Peach Melba which is well worth lingering over. There is always the classic and popular Creme Brulee for the traditionalists.

Charm is deliberately rustic: simple wooden tables, fresh flowers and candlelight, the soft theatre of a kitchen in view and blackboards that chart ever-changing specials. Wines, sourced by SH Jones of Banbury Wines from small independent growers, round things out. From date nights to graduation gatherings, the welcome is informal yet assured. Reserve a table, settle in, and let this Oxford classic do what it does best — make a little joie de vivre feel entirely everyday.
