In Portswood, Southampton, Baboo Ji Vegetarian Kitchen channels the spirit of its namesake — the wise village elder — into a kitchen that balances heritage with modernity.

Set within a bright, relaxed space crafted from repurposed materials, Baboo Ji wears its ethics lightly but proudly. Supplies are sourced from small businesses; cleaning products are green; packaging is compostable, and single-use plastic is off the table. Here, the traditions of the Indian subcontinent are reimagined through fresh, plant-based cooking, with vibrant flavours and careful spicing shaping a menu designed for all to enjoy.

In partnership with Ecologi, the team plants trees and trims its CO2 footprint, so conscience and appetite can dine together.

The cooking is made for conviviality. Crisp bengaluru 'wings' lead to pani puri that burst with tang and spice, while comforting plates of masala dosa show off creamy richness and deft technique. Can't forget crispy samosas or corn tikki.

Sides such as dal tadka bring smoky char and slow-tempered warmth, while saag paneer brings fresh spinach and cheese. End the meal with something sweet like a sizzling brownie and gulab jamun close the circle with indulgence.

Gather your favourites, share with abandon, and let the elder fuss over you: pull up a chair and go gently, plate by plate.
