A stone’s throw from historic Lewes Castle, Castle Chinese’s a family affair led by a husband-and-wife team. With roots in China and Malaysia and nearly two decades of cooking behind them, they bring a quietly confident touch to traditional Chinese food, served with the warmth and rhythm of a well-run family kitchen.

Recently refurbished with locally produced paints and contemporary fittings, the restaurant balances fresh finishes with a distinctly traditional feel. Two intimate dining rooms accommodate guests for dinner, offering a calm and welcoming setting that suits cosy suppers and celebratory tables.

On the plate, classic Chinese cookery meets Malaysian accents. Appetisers such as salt and chilli squid and the Castle mixed hors d’oeuvres set an aromatic tone, while spareribs in barbecue sauce bring a nostalgic gloss. Mains range from roast duck Chinese style and duck in garlic and chilli sauce to sizzling plates of chicken, pork with ginger and spring onions, and tender beef, with sweet and sour pork Hong Kong style never far away.

Seafood spans sizzling king prawns to Malaysian curry king prawns. Vegetarians are well looked after, with salt and chilli beancurd, Castle vegetarian hors d’oeuvres, sizzling veggie chicken and veggie beef in Szechuan sauce.
