The southern tip of Africa has landed in the Northern Quarter in the shape of Chakalaka. An area famous for its plentiful barbecues and welcoming spirit, this eatery is the perfect pit stop during a day or evening in town.
You'll spot them easily enough - their sunny disposition on the high street easily tempts you over to their side of the road. Once inside, you'll be greeted by a cacophony of delicious meaty smells, all of them mingling to place you in the centre of a beach-side barbecue in Cape Town. Chakalaka is keen to bring all the colour and life of these gatherings into their eatery with bold Aztec designs covering the walls, contrasting happily with multicoloured furniture and equally colourful food. You've never seen rice so yellow in your life!
As with any barbecue, sharing is the central principle and the menu is perfectly primed for a hands-on kind of feast. Big and bold flavours come out with signature boerewors sausages, fall-off-the-bone beef ribs in a monkey gland sauce, and traditional sosatle that served some skewered magic. You can also ball it up with a frikkadel - a traditional meatball, that also comes in a vegetarian version.
Bunny Chow claims its rightful place on the menu too. Here, a hollowed-out quarter loaf is filled with housemade curried lamb, jackfruit and paneer. They're best enjoyed with a South African bean relish or a lively feta and pomegranate salad; either way, there's no shortage of flavour.
