Perched by Sloane Square in Chelsea, The Black Penny brings a charming, unhurried spirit to West London.

As a neighbourhood favourite, it balances the warmth of cushioned interiors with seasonal outdoor seating, perfect for lingering over daytime plates or evening meals. Groups are well looked after, and the gentle buzz of conversation sets the tone for easygoing catch-ups and celebratory gatherings alike.

Step inside the kitchen, where creative flair meets familiar warmth. Think butterbean hummus lifted by lemon and sumac, or chilli and garlic king prawns that nod to the Med.

For daytime dining, house classics have real personality here too: The Hunter and The Gatherer prove that simple pleasures, well done, never go out of style.

Moving into later hours, heartier appetites gravitate to braised lamb shoulder served alongside creamy mash and baby onions, while pan-fried Scottish salmon arrives bright with fennel, olives, cherry tomatoes and capers.

Those seeking lighter moments can choose from crisp salads, featuring a punchy chicken Caesar or roasted marinated beetroot accompanied by rocket, avocado and goat cheese.

To follow, sweet finishes are unapologetically indulgent: burnt Basque cheesecake paired with berry compote, or a warm Belgian dark and milk chocolate brownie crowned with vanilla ice cream.

Drop by, settle in and let time slow pleasantly in the square - this is comfort with polish, and worth every penny.
