Kuroyoko

Located in Balham, Kuroyoko captures the restless spirit of Tokyo’s yokocho bars. Chef Scott Hallsworth, of Nobu, Kurobuta and Freak Scene fame, leads a bold and urban tribute to kushiyaki, where smoke, soy and citrus mingle in the air and sake sets the tempo for lively, late-night gatherings.

The menu leans into playful drinking fare, crafted with precision. Otsumami arrives crisp and bright, from shichimi-dusted chicken skin to tuna sashimi lifted by sesame-soy, pomelo and wasabi mayo. Skewers take centre stage, tebasaki brushed with smoked soy and tsukune lacquered in a sweet glaze that caramelises beautifully at the edges.

Beyond the grill, seafood and meat deepen the experience. Salmon glows in teriyaki and yuzu kosho, scallops melt in yuzu butter, and the hamburger with mustard miso, pickle relish and yaki niku tare shows clever irreverence. Pork belly with negi, aka miso and sancho pepper brings fire, while slow-cooked rice pots offer warmth, from truffled Japanese mushrooms to grilled salmon with smoked roe, balanced by house kimchee and oshinko.
