In Charing Cross, the Maharaja of India salutes the enduring allure of Indian cookery. With a name that nods to regal tradition, it brings the warmth of the subcontinent to the city’s bustle, channelling the glow and smoke of the tandoor alongside crisp, spice-led snacks and comforting classics.

The table often begins with the crackle of papadam and a bright mixed salad before giving way to starters that play on texture: onion bhaji, all tangled crunch and soft spice, and paneer 65, a crisp-fried favourite with a lively kick. From there, the grill takes centre stage. Tandoori chicken sizzler half arrives fragrant and bronzed, while lamb shaslik pairs tender meat with char-grilled vegetables. For those who like to graze and share, the tandoori mix grill gathers the highlights in one generous spread.

Seafood finds its moment too, with garlic king prawn pan-fried for savour and perfume. The mood is one of simple pleasures: the hiss of a hot plate, the waft of roasted spices, and plates designed for passing around. Maharaja of India Charing Cross invites diners to savour familiar favourites and smoky edges in equal measure. Make a date, bring an appetite, and let the sizzle do the talking.
