The Gurkhas might call Great Portland Street their home, but that isn't stopping them from taking their diners on a whistle-stop tour of Nepal's dramatic terrain and culinary history.
Lovingly named after Nepalese soldiers who served Britain, The Gurkhas pay homage to the strength and solidarity of the Nepalese people. And a beautiful homage it is too. Expect an elevated dining experience that takes Nepalese cuisine away from its street food origins and places it in an opulent and intimate setting. Perfect for small groups and couples, take your time to connect with the flavours and marvel at the stunning presentation that brings that wow factor to each and every dish.
And it's all down to Head Chef Joe Allen who has gleaned his expertise by immersing himself in cities like Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara. Inspired by all four corners of the country, sample traditional Nepalese dumplings in a tomato-based sauce, Nepali-style fried fish and marinated lamb tartare in Nepali herbs and spices. Even the starters are challenging you to try flavours hitherto unknown.
The mains bring the evening to a crescendo with stunning dishes featuring duck breast served alongside a Nepali pickle and grilled spiced monkfish with beaten rice. Vegetarians can get their hands on a corn, squash and cheese dish and add some rice prepared with ghee. And if you haven't had enough rice, indulge in the most comforting of comfort foods: Nepali spiced tea rice pudding. A symphony of warming spices and creamy sweetness, this is bound to chase away any rainy-day blues and land you in the warmer climes of Kathmandu.
