Harajuku Kitchen brings a confident slice of Japanese comfort cooking to Tollcross with a menu that balances street-food favourites and homely classics.

The journey often begins with small plates: takoyaki, those gently crisp pancake balls hiding tender octopus, dusted with bonito and aonori; and kara-age chicken, marinated in soy and sake for savoury depth, brightened by daikon.

The kitchen’s touch with texture is most vivid in its tempura. Light, lacy batter hugs seasonal vegetables, king prawn, soft shell crab and sea bass, creating a pleasing contrast of crunch and sweetness. Noodle-lovers will find solace in yaki soba, stir-fried with vegetables, pickled ginger and aonori, a tangle of smoke, tang and umami that feels as nostalgic as it is satisfying.

For deeper comfort, there are bowls to cradle: miso soup with wakame, tofu and spring onion, and Japanese steamed rice as the steadying anchor to richer flavours. Donburi brings familiar pleasures, from chicken teriyaki to unaju, where grilled eel in tare meets pickles and tamago. Japanese curry is hearty and golden, whether chosen as tonkatsu or kara-age chicken.

Designed for grazing or settling in, this is food that invites sharing, second helpings and contented silences. Plan a visit, follow the aroma of soy and sesame, and let the chopsticks do the talking.
