Tucked along Preston Street in Brighton, Goemon Ramen Bar keeps things beautifully simple: a traditional Japanese ramen and izakaya spot with an unassuming, minimal look that lets the cooking take centre stage. Regularly frequented by Japanese diners, it channels an authenticity that feels as reassuring as a well-timed slurp, promising comfort, value and the clean lines of classic technique.

Bowls of tonkotsu ramen arrive steaming and aromatic, with thin wheat noodles meeting a deeply savoury pork bone broth, slices of pork chashu and the gloss of black garlic oil. For those who like a nudge of heat, the spicy tonkotsu adds a lively kick without losing that silky richness. The izakaya spirit runs through the small plates: edamame for nibbling, kara-age fried chicken bathed in sweet soy, and gyoza grilled to a crisp-bottomed finish, whether pork or shrimp. When only a rice bowl will do, the Goemon Kara-age Don and the pork chashu bowl offer generous, no-nonsense satisfaction.

The mood is pared-back and focused, the kind of place where the steam curls up from the bowl and time slows to the rhythm of your chopsticks. Drop by for a quick bite or settle in for a leisurely fix of umami comfort. Take a seat, follow the aroma, and let the noodles do the talking—one slurp at a time.
