The sophisticated big sister of the chilled out Tonkotsu group, which sparked London’s obsession with ramen, sprawls across a prime space in the West End’s new St James’ Market development.

While the interiors may be more formal than usual Tonkotsu restaurants (think blonde wood and an impressive collection of decorative sake bottles), the 16-hour pork broth in their signature tonkotsu ramen is as unctuous, comforting and decadent as ever.

Other options include cooling ramen salad laced with zingy ponzu dressing and gyoza dumplings, freshly made every day and fried until golden, alongside small plates like sweet potato korokke

Perch at the long wine bar for sake, hip beers from microbreweries and interesting Japanese versions of classic cocktails. Expect Negronis made with fragrant cherry blossom tea that evokes Kyoto in springtime and Old Fashioneds infused with wakame seaweed.

The ramen is not as good as my first visit but then the rest are very high standard and tasty. Would definitely come again and try out other ramen selections.

The food and service were both excellent. My friend didn't let me know she was gluten & soy intolerant until we showed up and the staff went through the menu with her and managed to organise a meal for her. Not an easy job at a ramen restaurant where soy is pretty much in everything. The Tonkatsu ramen & prawn gyoza was delicious and the staff were very attentive, I will definitely be back!

Excellent value. Generous portion of chicken karage. Tonkotsu, seafood and Tokyo ramen tried- all could have done with a bit more seasoning/ more flavorful broth. Attentive and helpful servers.

Extremely stylish setting and really lovely waiter and service. As a family of 4, we each ordered a different ramen. Each uniquely tasty with its own identity. I had the veggie one and would have preferred fewer noodles and more vegetables. The Padron peppers and toasted seeds were super tasty and added good texture. The noodles themselves were delicious; not stodgy or starchy like many establishments. Overall tasty food in a hip atmosphere. Would love to try the salads next time.

Amazing service! Ramen was okay, not my best but not my worst. Best part was the broccoli starter which was delish.

The service was very friendly and attentive but not over the top. We had the chicken wings and prawn gyōza which were lovely and then the beef rib ramen which was awesome. I will definitely be going back. Good job

We got out of the play earlier than we thought we would. We went in and asked about possibly coming in a bit early. They happily seated us then and there. Picked our own table and he came right over with water and menus. All the staff where lovely. Food and drinks where there really fast. And gave great advice on cocktails. Would go again 10/10

This is our second time at this restaurant and we really liked it. The decor is light and airy. The food is traditional Japanese with a modern twist - really delicious. We liked the sake too. All this was topped up with enthusiastic and attentive service. Thumbs up!

Great food and great service. The spinach and goma salad was the best (side) dish of the evening.

The food was amazing especially the katsu curry... and the starters... and the side and to top it all off it was happy hour when we arrived (we arrived 6.30, happy hour until 7) which meant half price off all drinks ordered before 7! So we ordered 2 each at the start. The Katsu was only 9.95 too which is such great value and then with the half price on top - unreal. The staff were so friendly and attentive 10/10. Only thing I would mention is that we couldn't find it at first as the name is Anzu on the front!

The food was amazing! We had pork and prawn gyoza, cold ramen (seafood or duck), ice cream sandwiches and Kochi. We really enjoyed it. The cocktails were exotic and special, not something you'll get anywhere. Definitely recommend it!

I've been wanting to try Tonkotsu for ages, and they may now be my favourite London ramen restaurant! The signature tonkotsu broth was amazing, and very rich. King crab gyozas were great, as was the salted caramel, miso and chocolate guinness cake sandwiches. Drool. Probably wouldn't order the chicken kara-age again though, unfortunately our preferred choice of korokke was sold out. Service wasn't the best to be honest - basically all the staff seemed clueless and not really with it and struggled with clearing tables etc. Food took a long time (despite being ramen...) but I think we may have been forgotten as two big tables who arrived after us two got their food first! Had a lovely outside seat though, would definitely recommend.

The food was very good! The service was also great, although one of the waiters just started, so he was uncertain with some of the menu items, but lovely nonetheless.

Birthday celebrations with my other half. We had a selection of gyoza and on the sides such as the chicken Kara-age, korokke and Kim chi which were all well made and very delicious. We had the classic ramen which was perfection as was the shiitake cold ramen salad. Portian size is big. We finished on a salted caramel, miso, Guinness and chocolate Witt plum sake. Was a very lovely meal with excellent service!

Took my 2 daughters for dinner. We ordered the chilli chicken; cold noodles with softshell crab; dessert and each had the hibiscus margarita. We love the food in Tonkotsu. The restaurant's decor and facilities are also great. Also love the location. Finally, can't find fault in the service. Nice staff.

Food was amazing! We paid about £30 for a meal for three including few starters and desserts to share. I highly reccommend the gyoza and korrokke and the best was the tonkotsu broth! It was amazing! The only problem we had was finding the place, it is Anzu now instead of Tonkotsu!

Are waitresswas so lovely and had a clear passion for Japan. The yuzu sake was on point in the heat. The ramens where amazing slightly different from what you normally get, which is a good thing!!! They are incredibly filling, we where greedy and ordered way to much!!! Also the prawn starter was legendary have to have it again soon!!!

The restaurant was lovely, we sat outside and could hear live music from the nearby area. The service, selection of food and cocktails were great. The seafood ramen was perfect, however the Tonkotsu Ramen was a bit heavy and hard to finish. Would definitely recommend the gyoza (prawn) and don't forget to try the chilli flake dip!

Overall the experience was not too bad. We ordered mushroom gyoza and prawn katsu as the starter and seafood/ Tonkotsu ramen as main. The Tonkotsu ramen was brilliant, genuine Japanese favour. The soup base was as smooth as silk and the noodle was great in texture. the pork and egg were also great! Unfortunately, the seafood ramen was too plain and nearly tasteless on everything, thus my partner found hard to finish the noodle. The seafood ramen is not genuine Japanese style anyway. The manager took this and gratefully waived the bill of the seafood noodle. So overall, the experience is good

We had an awesome meal at Tonkotsu!! We ordered some starters to share and when they were delayed the waitress gave us some drinks on the house!! The food was delicious, every single thing we had was super tasty! 100% recommend trying the wings!!

We will be back for sure!! Thanks so much

Great location for the restaurant as it was far away from the crowds to not feel like people are watching you chow down Chinese soup and noodles. Great service too. They are great at having a chat through the menu helping you to make a decision and always with a smile.

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful meal here last Saturday, the food was excellent and the service was good. We had booked through First Table, which is great, I would highly recommend using it. There was no problem having booked through this website and the restaurant knew about it. There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant, helped also by the warm weather.

Tonkotsu St James is situated at Anzu, St James' Market, one of a few branches they have in London. My boyfriend and I had the chicken kaarage and pork gyoza as starters respectively, and the classic tonkotsu ramen for both our mains. Good and flavoursome food with rich broth for the ramen. It is very nice to sit in the outdoor patio area in the summer and the restaurant faces an inner side street rather than the main one so you don't have the breathe in the direct exhaust gas from the cars while dining outdoors. Service was attentive. Would recommend - 4*

Five delicious bowls for ramen for our table of five, tasty to the last mouthful, more ramen than most of us could eat but so enjoyable that its was hard to stop.
The desserts were perfectly crafted morsels of deliciousness.

I dined with a group of four people and everyone totally enjoyed the food, setting and overall experience. Certainly from myself it was one of the best Ramens I have ever tasted and enjoyed so highly recommend this place for food, location and ambience. Very satisfied.

We ordered the seafood ramen and the tonkotsu ramen for mains - they were both delicious and seemed freshly cooked. We ordered a variety of starters, they all were delivered to our table at good time and were very tasty (definitely recommend anything with crab meat!). we were lucky enough to get to the restaurant in time for drinks happy hour, so they were half price as well. All in all, cannot fault the food or the service - we will definitely be returning!

We had a very nice experience eating here as part of our movie date night, the staff were great and the food was excellent. For big eaters like myself: I would recommend asking for extra noodles with the Ramen, and although the soup is really nice, try not to drink all of it before you finish your noodles or you will be stuck with dry noodles!
