Cuisine: British, Modern European
Price Point: Mains from £20-£30

Tom Aikens has been turning heads since 2008 when he became the youngest British chef ever to be awarded two Michelin-stars at the tender age of 26.

His mini-chain Tom’s Kitchen may focus on comfort classics such as mussels in garlic sauce and burgers with triple cooked chips rather than haute cuisine, but his trademark obsession with quality ingredients from British suppliers is unmistakable.

During the week, the light-filled, airy dining room buzzes with suits entertaining clients over cocktails or picking up satisfying salads to go from the deli counter. On Saturday mornings, the suntrap terrace is a favourite with local lovelies sipping fresh smoothies.

With two young daughters himself, Aikens knows how to make families feel at home. Tuck into brunch classics such as eggs benedict fragrant with truffle shavings while your tots are kept occupied in the toy room, and take full advantage of the fact that children up to the age of 10 can eat for free on weekends.

We arrived early, so we had a drink in the bar, which is connected to the restaurant. Happy hour is from 5pm - 7pm, and has a great selection of drinks at low prices!

We moved into the restaurant, which had a great layout; had a great atmosphere, and felt comfortable.

The menu had enough options without being overbearing. I chose Steak Tartare for starter, with Sirloin Steak for my main. My dining partner chose Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Parfait, with Pork Belly for main. All the food was delicious and cooked to perfection.

The staff were excellent; very attentive without being too much so.

The restaurant is an excellent place to have after work drinks at the front bar, and if you’re feeling hungry, you can simply just walk up to the dining area.

The service and food was excellent. They were very attentive and the presentation of the dishes were perfect. Even our 4 year old son enjoyed dining at Tom's Kitchen. The crab gazpacho and the fish and chips were amazing! We will definitely go again and bring more friends now that we know it is children friendly and excellent food!

Perfectly paved, carefully cleaned and regularly repainted, Canary Wharf is a grownup toytown. Love it or hate it, this is London’s satellite business district - and it’s here that you’ll find Tom’s Kitchen.

Featuring herringbone flooring, white wall tiles and leather bench seating, the restaurant has a stylish, modern feel. We started with the spicy Devonshire crab cake and the salt cod brandade. Had this been a competition, there would have been a clear winner. The salt cod, served with pickled cucumber slices, dill oil and crispy skin, didn’t bring much by way of flavour or texture. However, the crab cake, served with chopped cucumber and quinoa salsa, was filling, flavoursome and featured a tempered kick.

For the mains, we ordered two steaks to share - the 225g shorthorn rib eye and the 650g Cumbrian chateaubriand. Served with peppercorn sauce and bearnaise butter, we opted for sides of broccoli with wild garlic and truffled mac and cheese (it’s a starter, but I’m a maverick).

To our surprise, the steaks also came with chips. Dessert was definitely off the menu and we were faced with a carnivore’s carnival of medium rare beef. The rib eye was tender and juicy while the pre-cut chateaubriand was beautifully buttery. To our surprise, they also came with triple cooked chips - in addition to the broccoli and the delicious truffled mac and cheese.

The meal had been a success. With great food, great service and a sophisticated vibe, I would definitely visit Tom’s Kitchen again.

Food was absolutely excellent. With First Table, we dined like kings and treated ourselves to the chateaubriand and LOTS of sides! The beef, lamb rump and cod (a special) were all cooked to perfection and tasted divine. The truffle mac and cheese, spiced whitebait, chicken liver and fois gras parfait and chocolate pudding were also worth writing home about. Would probably pass on the duck arancini and both bottles of wine we had (red, one house and one second tier) were pretty average. Service was great, friendly attentive waiters who refreshed our plates and cutlery. The restaurant was quiet so it lacked a bit of atmosphere - we stayed 6.30pm to 10.30pm and only saw a handful of other tables. Would definitely recommend booking Tom's Kitchen!

The service at Tom’s Kitchen was outstanding... friendly and attentive without being too overbearing. The food was great, particularly the fish, however while I found the spicy chicken burger very tasty it was difficult to eat without making a mess as the corn-bread buns disintegrated. I would definitely recommend Tom’s Kitchen.

Visited Tom's Kitchen with my boyfriend on a quiet Monday evening for dinner. We live near Canary Wharf so have always been keen to try out this place - with First Table, even better!

The restaurant is spacious, well-lit and overlooks to this courtyard behind some offices. The deco is nice - mainly comprised of wood, and has large areas cordoned off which suggest it is suitable for big groups (and children as there seems to be a small play area near one of the big tables).

We were greeted by a polite and friendly manager and were taken to a nice table at the side with a view of the outside. The waitress was also very attentive and we enjoyed our food - which was the Rib-eye steak and fish and chips. Food took rather long to arrive given the restaurant was not busy. Apart from these small items to nitpick, overall it was a good experience and would recommend.
